Power and Control

power and control wheel

Domestic violence is a pattern of behaviours used to gain or maintain power and control.

The Power and Control wheel below demonstrates the different ways a person might demonstrate abuse towards their partner.

The inside of the wheel is made up of subtle and often continual behaviour used over time. The outside of the wheel represents physical and sexual domestic violence.

The Power and Control wheel identifies various abuse and manipulation tactics an abuser might employ to hold power and control towards their partner.

This includes:

  • Using coercion and threats
  • Using intimidation
  • Using emotional abuse
  • Using isolation
  • Minimising, denying and blaming
  • Using children
  • Using male privilege
  • Using Economic abuse

It is important to note that an abuser often demonstrates more than one type of domestic violent behaviour. While the wheel does not show the entirety of domestic violence, it showcases a good understanding and overview of the complexities of abuse.
