Keeping Our Kids Connected
KEEP CONNECTED! Never was this message more important that in the current COVID-19 situation we all find ourselves in. In these difficult and changing days we are told that being connected to others as adults is vital. It is important for our mental health; it is important for maintaining relationships and it is important for our overall wellbeing. This is our new reality.
You have probably taken steps over the last two weeks to adjust your communication to people who you can’t see face to face to phone calls and facetime or skype because keeping your connection is something you value and meets your needs as a human . You might lean more on your support network of friends or family or neighbours or you may reach out to services that we will all need at difficult times.
Now, let’s talk about how you can help your child to KEEP CONNECTED.
It is essential that children have the same opportunities to connect across two households. For the same reasons of wellbeing and mental health children should be assisted to keep their relationships and connections strong and healthy. We know that when children are assisted by positive parenting to maintain relationships then they are more likely to have positive outcomes as adolescents and young adults. As parents we should think about the following:
ASK YOURSELF
Am I doing everything I can to assist my child to have a positive relationship with the other parent?
&
As a co-parent what does our child need from us to have successful communication?
Depending on the age and development of the child a variety of types of communication could occur:
- Voice contact via the phone.
- Facetime/ skype
- Letter/cards/pictures
It is important to follow any court orders and safety issues when considering type of communication. If you need to talk about how to follow the orders or to negotiate different arrangements, Contact NLS Law and we can assist you.
“At the end of the day, the most overwhelming key to child’s success is the positive involvement of parents”.
